Radiology Volume Capacity Planner

The Radiology Capacity Planner is designed to answer a simple question: “Given the hours your facility is open and the protocols you run, how many patients can we realistically scan per day?” Begin by using the Manage Procedures view to set up your standard exam menu. Here, you can add or edit procedures such as MRI Brain, CT Abdomen, or US Abdomen, along with the typical minutes per slot for each. These values become your reference library and determine the default scan times used in the planner. Once your procedures are accurate for your organization, return to the main planner and add your locations, such as “Main Hospital MRI 1,” “Outpatient CT,” or “ED CT Scanner.” For each location, select the modality, enter the hours the unit is available for scanning, and choose a procedure from the dropdown. The planner automatically retrieves the default minutes per scan and calculates how many patient slots that unit can support each day.

From there, the tool acts as a scenario engine. You can adjust the Minutes/scan for any individual unit without affecting the global defaults, enabling you to model protocol improvements or fast-track slots for specific machines. As you modify hours or scan times, the Daily capacity updates on each card, and the header refreshes to show Active units and total exams per day across all locations. Leaders can use this to compare current capacity with observed daily volume, stress-test extended hours in the ED or weekends in outpatient sites, and estimate the impact of adding a new scanner before making capital investments. In short, think of the dashboard as a dynamic whiteboard for operational planning: tweak the numbers, watch the capacity change, and leverage those insights to set staffing plans, manage backlogs, and support your case for growth.
